Post Office Ltd confirms the Bridge Street branch shuts Wednesday 14 October. It is reviewing applications to replace it, and there is no consultation.
Pinner Post Office will close on Wednesday 14 October 2026. Post Office Ltd set the date out in a letter to customers dated 26 August, which classifies the branch at TG Jones, 11 Bridge Street, HA5 3HR, as a “Branch Unplanned Closure”.
That classification matters more than it looks. It decides what happens next, and it decides what a resident can actually do about it.
What the Post Office has said
The letter is signed by Kieran Gibson, a corporate account lead at Post Office Ltd, and posted on the company’s own consultation hub as branch record 283020. Three things in it are worth reading closely.
- The branch is closing because of the restructuring at its host retailer. “As you may already be aware following the restructuring plan announcement by our retail partner TG Jones, some Post Office branches inside their stores will close.”
- Post Office Ltd wants to keep a counter in Pinner. It says it is “currently in the early stages of reviewing applications to run the Post Office branch” and will update when it can.
- Any replacement has to wash its face. The letter adds that “it is important that any future service is sustainable for the person operating the service, and for Post Office Limited”.
So the counter is going, but the search for someone to take it on is live. That is the decision still in play, and it is the one worth writing to the company about.
Why there is no consultation
Post Office Ltd runs three kinds of process under its Principles of Community Engagement: consultations, engagements and notifications. Pinner is filed as a notification, the lightest of the three, which tells customers what is happening rather than asking them.
The footnote to the Principles, printed at the end of the Pinner letter, sets out what follows an unplanned closure:
Where the closure is unplanned, the service provision in the area will be reviewed based on current usage, modelling and availability of any suitable replacement or alternative service model. A commercial decision will be made if to actively seek to replace the closed service and will not be subject to public consultation.
In plain terms: there is no formal process to respond to, and no vote to win. The company has promised to notify local representatives again once it has news on a replacement, and to display a poster in or near the branch. It aims to give four weeks’ notice of changes, and accepts that an unplanned change may get less. The Pinner letter went out on 26 August for a 14 October closure, which is about seven weeks.
If a resident thinks the Principles have not been followed, the complaint goes to Post Office Ltd first, and then to Citizens Advice. Note the limit on that route: Citizens Advice assesses whether the process was followed, not whether the decision was right.
Where the closure came from
The shop’s troubles are a matter of court record. On 1 July 2026 Mr Justice Hildyard sanctioned two linked restructuring plans under Part 26A of the Companies Act 2006, for TG Jones High Street Limited and TG Jones Retail Holdings Limited, in cases CR-2026-002241 and CR-2026-002874. His summary of reasons is published on the judiciary’s own site.
The judge recorded that the business “operate[s] what used to be the UK high street business of WH Smith, until the business was sold in 2025 and rebranded as ‘TG Jones’”, and that it then ran 451 stores. The stated purpose of the plans was to save the companies from “collapsing into insolvent administration”, partly through “the rationalisation of the leasehold estate to remove uneconomic stores”. Landlords led by British Land plc objected until shortly before the hearing. Hildyard J said the plans were “objectively, the lesser of two evils resulting from the Plan Companies’ trading failures and financial predicaments”.
There is an awkward detail in the same document. Setting out why the company believed it could trade its way back, the judge quoted its own witness on “a compelling ‘story’ to tell consumers with our focus on delivering improved retail experiences through the Post Office, Toys ‘R’ Us and Hobbycraft concessions”. The Post Office counter was part of the case for the rescue. In Pinner it is one of the things the rescue closes.
The two branches the Post Office is sending you to
The letter names two alternatives, and gives its own assessment of each. Both are about a mile from Bridge Street.
| Cannon Lane | North Harrow | |
|---|---|---|
| Address | 88 Cannon Lane, Pinner HA5 1HR | 370 Pinner Road, Harrow HA2 6DZ |
| Monday to Friday | 08:00 to 17:30 | 09:00 to 17:30 |
| Saturday | 08:00 to 12:00 | 09:00 to 13:00 |
| Sunday | Closed | Closed |
| Services | Similar, but not the full range | The same services |
| Nearest bus stop | Within 130 metres | Outside the branch |
The services line is the one to check before you travel. Post Office Ltd says Cannon Lane “offers similar services however excluding a comprehensive range of Travel Money, Passport Check & Send and On Demand Travel Insurance”. North Harrow “offers the same services”. If you are renewing a passport or ordering currency, North Harrow is the branch that can do it.
Cannon Lane opens an hour earlier on weekdays and on Saturday mornings. North Harrow stays open an hour later on a Saturday. Both have level access and a wide door at the entrance, and parking outside. Neither opens on a Sunday.
The petition, and the date it uses
David Simmonds, the MP for Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner, launched a petition on Thursday 10 September. On his campaign page he calls the closure “incredibly disappointing” and ties it to the court-approved restructuring, saying the owner Modella will close 150 of its stores.
His petition page sets the closure in a longer run of local losses, listing Mount Vernon’s Urgent Care Centre, the front desk at Pinner Police Station and “multiple banks”. He names the same two alternative branches Post Office Ltd does, and questions “whether these alternatives are genuinely accessible”, particularly in a district with “a larger demographic of older and vulnerable people, many of whom face mobility barriers or are unable to access online services easily”.
One difference is worth flagging rather than smoothing over. The MP’s pages say the TG Jones branch closes on 19 October. Post Office Ltd’s letter says the Post Office closes on 14 October. Both can hold: the counter can shut before the shop around it does. Where the counter is concerned, the Post Office is the first-hand source, and it gives 14 October.
What it means for you
- Use the branch before Wednesday 14 October for anything that has to be done at a counter in Pinner, including passport Check & Send, travel money and cash deposits for a business.
- For passports and currency after that date, go to North Harrow, 370 Pinner Road HA2 6DZ. Post Office Ltd says Cannon Lane does not carry the full range of those services.
- Check hours before you set off. Neither alternative opens on a Sunday. Cannon Lane shuts at midday on Saturday; North Harrow at 1pm.
- Comments go to Post Office Ltd, not the council: comments@postoffice.co.uk, or FREEPOST Your Comments. The letter warns that comments are not kept confidential unless you mark them “In Confidence”. The helpline is 03452 66 01 15, textphone 03457 22 33 55.
- There is no consultation to respond to, but the replacement is undecided. Post Office Ltd says it is reviewing applications to run a Pinner branch, so a case for one is being made to a live decision rather than a closed one.
Getting to either branch is a bus ride for many people in Pinner. Our guides to parking in Harrow and roadworks and travel cover what driving there costs and what is dug up this week.
We will report what Post Office Ltd decides about a replacement counter. The company has said it will write to local representatives again once it has news.
Frequently asked questions
When does Pinner Post Office close?
Wednesday 14 October 2026. Post Office Ltd gave the date in its information letter of 26 August 2026, which covers the branch at TG Jones, 11 Bridge Street, HA5 3HR. The MP David Simmonds gives 19 October for the TG Jones shop itself.
Why is Pinner Post Office closing?
Because the shop it sits inside is closing. Post Office Ltd says the branch is affected by the restructuring at its retail partner TG Jones, the former WH Smith high street business, whose two restructuring plans were sanctioned by the High Court on 1 July 2026.
Will Pinner get another Post Office?
It is not decided. Post Office Ltd says it is “in the early stages of reviewing applications to run the Post Office branch” and will update when it can. It adds that any future service has to be sustainable for both the operator and Post Office Ltd.
Can I object to the closure?
There is no public consultation. Pinner is filed as a notification, not a consultation, and Post Office Ltd’s own Principles say that after an unplanned closure the decision on replacing the service is commercial and “will not be subject to public consultation”. You can still write to comments@postoffice.co.uk or FREEPOST Your Comments.
Where is the nearest Post Office to Pinner after 14 October?
Post Office Ltd names two, each about a mile away: Cannon Lane, 88 Cannon Lane, Pinner HA5 1HR, open 08:00 to 17:30 on weekdays and 08:00 to 12:00 on Saturday; and North Harrow, 370 Pinner Road, Harrow HA2 6DZ, open 09:00 to 17:30 on weekdays and 09:00 to 13:00 on Saturday. Neither opens on Sunday.
Which branch can still do passports and travel money?
North Harrow. Post Office Ltd says Cannon Lane offers similar services but excludes a comprehensive range of Travel Money, Passport Check & Send and On Demand Travel Insurance, while North Harrow “offers the same services”.
