No Tube, bus or Overground on Christmas Day. Last Boxing Day Harrow had no Lioness line, no Piccadilly west of Rayners Lane and Sunday buses. 2026 plans due December.
Transport for London and the train companies have not yet published their Christmas 2026 plans, and National Rail’s list of booked engineering works currently stops at 19 December. What is already fixed is the shape of the holiday, because TfL runs it the same way every year: early finishes on Christmas Eve, no service on Christmas Day, and a thinner network on Boxing Day. Last year Boxing Day was the day that hit Harrow hardest, with no Lioness line at all. This page sets out what happened in 2025, what is known for 2026, and where each Harrow station sits, and we will add the 2026 detail the day it is published.
The quick answer
There will be no Tube, London bus or Overground service on Christmas Day, Friday 25 December 2026, following TfL’s long-standing practice. On Boxing Day 2025 the Lioness line did not run at all, the Piccadilly line stopped at Rayners Lane instead of running to Uxbridge, and buses ran a Sunday service. TfL published its 2025 Christmas plans on 2 December, so expect this year’s in early December.
Christmas 2026 at a glance
Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year, so the long weekend runs straight into the substitute bank holiday on Monday 28 December. Harrow Council’s calendar lists 25 and 28 December 2026 and 1 January 2027 as the bank holidays (Harrow Council).
As at 25 September, TfL’s own status service shows no planned closures on the Metropolitan, Jubilee, Bakerloo or Piccadilly lines, or on any Overground line, for 20 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 (TfL line status API). That is the normal position three months out: festive closures are usually added to the system in November and December.
What happened last Christmas
TfL’s 2025 announcement, made on 2 December 2025, set out the pattern (TfL press release):
- Christmas Eve: services ran but finished early.
- Christmas Day: no service on most public transport. Taxis, private hire, Santander Cycles and Dial-a-Ride kept running.
- Boxing Day: no service on parts of the network, and a Sunday service on the Tube, London Buses and trams.
- New Year’s Eve: apart from planned closures, services ran all night.
- ULEZ did not apply on Christmas Day only. The central London Congestion Charge was suspended from 25 December to 1 January.
TfL’s detailed Boxing Day page for 2025 is where the Harrow detail was (TfL, Boxing Day 2025, archived):
- No service on the Lioness line. That is the only line at Hatch End and Headstone Lane, so both stations had no trains at all.
- Piccadilly line: no service between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge. Rayners Lane itself kept the Metropolitan line.
- Metropolitan line: no service between Rickmansworth and Amersham or Chesham. Harrow’s Metropolitan stations were not affected.
- Tube: a reduced Sunday service from 7am, and no Night Tube.
- Buses: a Sunday service on all routes, day and night.
On New Year’s Eve 2025, TfL’s page again showed no Piccadilly service between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge, with the rest of the Tube running all night (TfL, 31 December 2025, archived).
Which Harrow stations depend on which line
This matters because a closure is only a problem if it is your only line. From TfL’s station data (TfL StopPoint API):
| Station | Lines | Hit on Boxing Day 2025? |
|---|---|---|
| Harrow & Wealdstone | Bakerloo, Lioness, Southern, West Midlands Trains | Lioness line off; Bakerloo ran |
| Kenton | Bakerloo, Lioness | Lioness line off; Bakerloo ran |
| Hatch End | Lioness only | No trains |
| Headstone Lane | Lioness only | No trains |
| Harrow-on-the-Hill | Metropolitan, Chiltern Railways | Tube ran at Sunday frequency |
| Pinner | Metropolitan | Tube ran at Sunday frequency |
| Rayners Lane | Metropolitan, Piccadilly | Piccadilly off to the west; Metropolitan ran |
| South Harrow | Piccadilly | Ran towards central London |
| Stanmore | Jubilee | Tube ran at Sunday frequency |
National Rail: Chiltern, Southern and West Midlands Trains
Chiltern Railways from Harrow-on-the-Hill and the Southern and West Midlands Trains services from Harrow & Wealdstone are National Rail, not TfL, and the festive plans come from the train companies and Network Rail. National Rail’s engineering works listing, read on 25 September, holds nothing yet for 20 December onwards; its latest entry starts on 19 December (National Rail planned works sitemap). The operators’ Christmas timetables, including last trains on Christmas Eve, normally appear on National Rail’s Christmas travel page in the weeks before. We will add the Harrow services as soon as they do.
Parking over Christmas
Harrow Council’s car parks page says on-street pay and display charges apply Monday to Saturday and on Sunday afternoons “excluding Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Easter Sunday”, and the same exclusion is printed for some of its car parks; otherwise charges do apply on bank holidays unless a car park’s entry says otherwise (Harrow Council, car parks and on-street parking). Each car park’s hours and tariffs, and the rules on the free first hour, are on our parking in Harrow page.
Still to confirm, and when
- TfL’s Christmas and New Year plans for 2026, including Christmas Eve last trains and Boxing Day closures. Expected early December (last year: 2 December).
- Chiltern, Southern and West Midlands Trains festive timetables and any engineering works between 24 December and 2 January. Expected November to early December.
- Any Harrow Council Christmas parking offer beyond the standing rules above.
